Pawcatuck Neighborhoods - Downerville

Downerville in Pawcatuck, a part of Stonington CT, is located just across the Pawcatuck River from Canal St in Westerly RI.

"On the south side next west of the Stillman Mill was the planing mill, office and draught room of C. Maxson & Co., then the Pawcatuck Hotel, Avery Hoxie, landlord, with livery stable in the rear. The next was the home of Dr. William Robinson, in his day a large owner of real estate. He held title at time of death to a large part of Downerville, better known years ago by that name than at present, and I wish to correct the impression that may have existed why this part of Pawca-^ tuck was thus named.

The name came from a man who did not live in Pawcatuck or have any real estate here. Mr. George Downer, a New York business man, was the executor of Doctor Robinson's will, with power of sale. Many who bought lots here and built their homes never heard of Doctor Robinson, but the popular Mr. Downer made the sale, signed the deed, and thus Downerville."

The Gales Ferry Real Estate Market Report is a monthly statement of the median sales price for homes, the number of sales, the average price per square foot for homes, the number of homes for sale, and the average listing price of Gales Ferry homes for sale.

Gales Ferry is a village in the town of Ledyard, Connecticut. Gales Ferry is located along the eastern bank of the Thames River. The village developed as a result of having a ferry to Uncasville located at this site, and from which the village was named.

The Gales Ferry community has several neighborhoods, including The Village, Birdland, Christy Hills, Sherwood Forest, Glenwoods, and Presidential Estates.

The ferry which gave its name to the surrounding community of Gales Ferry was first established on the Thames in 1740. John Comstock, Ralph Stoddard, Jr. and John Hurlbut were the original three ferry men. It became known as Gale's Ferry when it was owned by Roger Gale from 1759 to 1764.

The ferry landing site at Gales Ferry (41°25′50.41″N 72°5′36.06″W) at 2 Riverside Place, is now occupied by a complex of buildings owned by Yale University which serve as a training camp for the Yale Heavyweight Men's Crew for the Harvard–Yale Regatta. The complex consists of the Varsity House, Manager's House and the Boathouse.

Mystic Neighborhoods - Pequotsepos

Pequotsepos Road connects Jerry Browne Road and Mistuxet Road on the eastern side of the Pequotsepos River in Mystic.

The names in the Stonington area come from the Algonquin dialect spoken by the Pequot-Mohegans. In the Indian language many words were made up of two or more elements. For example, Pequot-sepos combines Pequot, which stood for both the tribe and the river we call Thames, and sepos meaning "little river." We translate this as "little river of the Pequots."

Mystic Neighborhoods-Greenmanville

Named for its founders, Greenmanville in Mystic Seaport represents a typical 19th century industrial town with a rich documented history of participation in the movement to abolish slavery.

The Greenman brothers founded a shipyard here in Mystic and became social leaders in the community that grew around it. They contributed to the establishment of a Seventh-Day Baptist church (c. 1851), whose denomination denounced slavery by its covenant.

In 1852, the church hosted Lucy Stone, a famous Anti-Slavery Society and women’s rights leader for a lecture, when no other churches in the area would allow her to speak. The brothers also donated to antislavery causes and ran for local offices on antislavery platforms.

Oral tradition places the Greek Revival-style home (c. 1839) of George Greenman (1805-1891) as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Many of the Greenmanville buildings are open to the public with regular admission to the Mystic Seaport.
